Space Maintainer

Space maintainers, custom made in acrylic or metal, are use to keep open the space in a child’s mouth where a permanent tooth has not yet erupted. Space maintainers can either be removable or cemented into the mouth for longer-term use until the permanent tooth comes in. Once the permanent tooth erupts, the space maintainer is removed.

Surgical Exposure of Unerupted Tooth

If an adult tooth has not yet erupted, surgical exposure may be required to help move along the process, especially in conjunction with orthodontic procedures. The surgery is straightforward and involves using a laser to gently open up the gum on top of the impacted tooth in order to expose it. If necessary, a baby tooth present in the space can be removed at the same time.

Retainers (Fixed & Removable)

Orthodontic retainers can be custom made at our practice. Typically made of clear plastic (in some cases metal), retainers (both removable and cement-bonded) are used to hold the teeth in position following surgery or orthodontic treatment.

Tooth Extraction

Occasionally, a tooth will need to be extracted before beginning orthodontic treatment to accommodate a proper orthodontic procedure. During an extraction, the area is numbed with anesthesia and then the tooth is loosened from the socket in the gum. After the loosening, the tooth is removed carefully using a forcep. Following tooth extraction, a few stitches may be required. As a gentle dental practice, adult patients always have the option of using nitrous oxide or sedation during their treatment.
